Welcome to Greenbar
Your money, clearly.
Your budget is ready. Import your Bank Transactions to compare actual spending.
No transactions yet. Import a file and they'll show up here, searchable and grouped by date.
How to get started
1
Adjust Settings (optional)
Before importing, open Settings to set your monthly budget targets, add your own category rules, and set your bank's column names if they're unusual.
2
Download your Bank Transactions
Log into your bank's website, go to Transaction History or Account Activity, and export your Bank Transactions. Usually found under Download, Export, or Statements.
3
Tap Import and select your file
Tap the green Import button at the top. Select your Bank Transactions from Downloads. Greenbar handles everything instantly -- nothing is uploaded anywhere.
4
Explore your data
Your dashboard updates immediately. Repeat monthly -- new imports merge with existing data automatically. Your history builds over time.
What is a CSV file?
CSV stands for Comma-Separated Values. It’s a plain-text spreadsheet file where each line is one transaction and the columns — date, description, amount — are separated by commas. Files end in
.csv.
What to pick at your bank
When your bank lists export options, choose CSV — sometimes labeled “Comma-Separated Values,” “Excel-compatible CSV,” or just “spreadsheet.”
Other formats Greenbar accepts
If CSV isn’t offered,
.tsv (tab-separated) and .txt files with the same row-per-transaction layout work too.Formats that won’t work
PDFs (statements), OFX / QFX (Quicken), and Excel workbooks (
.xls, .xlsx) aren’t plain text and can’t be read. Pick CSV instead. How to export from your bank
Pick your bank above for step-by-step export instructions.
What each screen does
Summary
Your home screen. Shows your monthly net, income vs expenses, and top spending categories. Switch months with the buttons at the top, or tap All for a combined view.
Budget
A side-by-side look at your budget targets and what you actually spent. Green means under budget, red means over. Categories you haven't budgeted for are listed separately at the bottom.
Transactions
Full searchable transaction list grouped by date. Use the search bar to filter by merchant name or category. Shows income and expenses with color coding.
Settings
Set everything up: your bank's column names, words that mark income, transactions to leave out, rules for re-sorting merchants into categories, and your monthly budget targets. Changes take effect on your next import.
Upload Log
Open the Upload Log to see a history of all the Bank Transactions you've imported -- filename, date, transaction count, and months covered.
Category deep-dive
Transactions button
Tap Transactions on any category row to see every merchant within that category ranked by total spend, with transaction count and percentage share.
Insights button
Tap Insights for a full analysis: monthly trend chart, budget comparison, top vendors, and automatically generated observations about your spending patterns in that category.
Private by design. Your transactions, budgets and settings stay in Greenbar's storage on your device. There's no account and no server — so there's nowhere to send them.
Under the Hood
How it’s built
Greenbar installs from the App Store or Google Play and then runs entirely on your phone. Importing, categorizing and saving all happen on-device — no internet connection is needed for day-to-day tracking.
→
A normal app — install it from your app store; no separate Greenbar account to create
→
Your data is saved in Greenbar’s private storage on your device. Only Greenbar can read it.
→
Works offline. No connection is needed to track, categorize or save your spending.
→
No third-party code — Greenbar loads no outside scripts, fonts, analytics or trackers
What happens when you import a file
Everything happens instantly on your device. Your file is never sent anywhere.
1
Read the file
Greenbar reads your Bank Transactions and works out which column is which — date, description, amount. If your bank uses unusual column names, you can set them in Settings.
2
Sort into categories
Each transaction gets a category. Banks label things differently, so Greenbar translates common names — “Restaurants/Dining” becomes “Dining Out,” for example. You can customize these rules in Settings.
3
Build your dashboard
Transactions are grouped by month, totals are calculated, and the Summary screen updates immediately.
4
Handle overlapping months
If you import a file that covers months you’ve already imported, Greenbar asks what you want to do — keep the old data, use the new data, or combine both.
5
Save everything
Your transactions and settings are saved on your device. They’ll be there next time you open Greenbar — no sign-in needed.
How your data is stored
Greenbar keeps your data in your device's local storage. Nothing is ever sent anywhere. The main pieces:
Transactions
All your imported transactions and monthly summaries. It grows as you import more history.
Settings
Your budget targets, custom category rules, and any column names you’ve set for your bank.
Import log
A record of every file you’ve imported — name, date, and how many transactions it had. The last 50 are kept.
Setup status
A simple note of whether you’ve been through the budget setup.
Walkthrough status
Remembers whether you’ve seen the intro slides, so they don’t show up every time you open the app.
How your Health Score is calculated
Each month gets a score from 0 to 100, which becomes a letter grade. It’s made up of three things:
Did you save money?
40 pts
Saving 20% or more of your income earns full marks. Spending more than you earned scores zero.
Did you stick to your budget?
40 pts
Each budget category is scored on how close your actual spending was to your target. Being within 10% is perfect. If you haven’t set a budget yet, this part is neutral.
Are you tracking everything?
20 pts
Having 5 or more spending categories with real data earns full marks. This rewards importing complete statements rather than just a few transactions.
Grades: A (90+) B (80+) C (70+) D (60+) F (below 60)
The AI assistant
The ? button opens a built-in help assistant that answers questions about how to use Greenbar. It works entirely on your device.
→
What it helps with: importing files, setting budgets, understanding each screen, and how the app works.
→
What gets sent: nothing — it runs offline, so your questions and your data never leave your device.
→
What it won’t do: give investment advice or answer questions unrelated to using Greenbar.
→
Where to find it: tap the ? button in the top corner. It appears after setup is complete.
Bank Transactions tips
Greenbar works with Bank Transactions exported from any bank. It automatically looks for columns named things like “Date,” “Description,” “Amount,” and “Category.” If your bank uses different names, you can set them in Settings.
→
Date column: Works with common date formats like 05/04/26, 05/04/2026, or 2026-05-04.
→
Amount column: Negative numbers are expenses, positive are income. Dollar signs and commas are ignored.
→
Category column: Optional. Greenbar will sort uncategorized transactions using the Description instead.
Files from most US, UK, Australian and Canadian banks import without any setup. If something looks wrong, check Settings → Column Mapping (region, currency and date format).
Speed & limits
→
Fast to open. Greenbar is lightweight and launches in well under a second.
→
No transaction limit. Greenbar has been tested with 2,000+ transactions without slowing down, with room for years of history.
→
Storage warning. You’ll get a heads-up if your saved data is getting close to full. If that happens, clear older months from Settings.
→
Screens load when needed. The Budget and Transactions tabs only build when you open them, keeping the app quick.
